From GYLC workshop I have learned many skills but two things which were the crux of that workshop were
- Building Leadership Skills
- Volunteering
LEADERSHIP
Leadership is defined as ''a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task"
Leadership Skills: Leadership mostly involves the following skills....
- Integrity - the most important requirement; without it everything else is for nothing.
- Leading by example - always be seen to be working harder and more determinedly than anyone else.
- Helping alongside your people when they need it.
- Fairness - treating everyone equally and on merit.
- Backing-up and supporting your people.
- Being decisive - even if the decision is to delegate or do nothing if appropriate - but be seen to be making fair and balanced decisions.
- Asking for people's views, but remain neutral and objective.
- Always doing what you say you will do - keeping your promises.
- Taking notes and keeping good records.
- Planning and prioritising.
- Budgeting
- Teamwork
- Managing your time well and helping others to do so too.
- Encouraging your people to grow, to learn and to take on as much as they want to, at a pace they can handle.
VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering: in the sense of carrying out tasks or providing services for individuals or community organizations without financial support and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life.
How we can volunteer to help others.....
- Community Voluntary Work (Working for the development of community)
- Volunteering in Schools ( Educating students)
- Volunteering in an Emergency ( Helping others e.g first aid, rescuing)
- Environmental Volunteering ( Cleaning streets, houses etc)
- Micro-Volunteering (Volunteering through internet with help of content e.g Blogging etc)
